We are looking for a Senior PHP Full Stack Developer to join our development team and contribute to the evolution of a Laravel-based platform. This role is suited to someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, improving system architecture, and working across both backend and frontend layers of a modern, containerised application. You will work within a small, focused office-based team, taking ownership of core service logic, background processing, and third-party integrations. The position offers a high level of ownership and the opportunity to influence technical direction. This is a fully office-based role in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, with a permanent salary of 50000 - 55000.
Requirements
- Strong commercial experience with PHP 8.0+ and Laravel 10+, building robust and maintainable applications - Comfortable working across the full stack, including Blade, Livewire, and modern frontend tooling such as Vite, TailwindCSS, and Node - Solid understanding of database design and optimisation, ideally with MySQL, and experience using Redis for caching and queues - Experience working in containerised environments such as Docker and docker-compose - Hands-on experience with background job processing and queue-based workflows - Familiarity with Git-based workflows, pull requests, and peer code reviews - Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams - Pragmatic approach to testing and quality assurance, ideally with exposure to PHPUnit and CI practices - Ability to work independently on larger tasks while contributing to overall technical direction
Responsibilities
- Design and develop backend services that are scalable, testable, and maintainable within a modern Laravel environment - Take ownership of service-layer logic, addressing existing gaps and implementing clean, modular solutions to support integrations and business operations - Collaborate with the team to improve queue job handling, reliability, traceability, and error management across asynchronous processes - Work closely with DevOps and QA to support CI/CD pipelines and ensure automated testing and deployments meet quality standards - Maintain and optimise local development and Docker-based environments, including queue workers and supporting services - Proactively identify and resolve technical debt, contributing to platform stability and production readiness - Support system integrations with third-party services and internal APIs - Contribute to code quality through peer reviews, consistent development patterns, and knowledge sharing - Assist with improvements to frontend tooling and workflows, contributing to UI components built with Livewire, TailwindCSS, and Vite - Stay up to date with developments across the Laravel ecosystem and contribute to ongoing technical improvements
